The Art and Design Department

The Art and Design Department plays a prominent role at Impington. The importance of the visual arts is communicated through the excellent work achieved by students which we regularly exhibit around the college. Our teaching aims to draw out the unique potential of each student and to develop self-esteem and personal autonomy. Art is taught in mixed ability groups through out and the work shown here is a cross section of age groups and abilities.

The Art Curriculum

We aim to provide students with a visual language for communication and the opportunity to develop their intellect and creativity. The art curriculum also contributes to students’ cultural, moral and spiritual education. For instance you can see examples of year 9 student’s work on this site that was based on their food project to promote the importance of a healthy diet. This work has been professionally printed and is on permanent display in the college café. There are also some striking graphics images based on human rights and the work of Amnesty International.

Years 7-9 KS3

The department has agreed common themes and practices to ensure progression and continuity. By the end of year nine students have experienced a variety of different materials and processes including painting, printmaking, textiles and sculpture. This collection of images includes sculptures based on the figurative work of Henry Moore and Antony Gormley. The series of watercolours in the style of Kandinsky were a result of a joint science and art project based on a study of cells.

Years 10-11 KS4

Art is a very popular option at GCSE and there are currently four groups following the Edexcel, unendorsed course. Students are encouraged to explore their own responses to a theme in their sketchbooks. Emphasis is placed on research and investigation, connecting to the work of artists, but most importantly experimenting with ideas and communicating a personal response. We have included a selection of work from the GCSE exhibition.

Applied Art GCSE Double Award

This course was introduced in 2006 and it allows students to produce a variety of 2D and 3D work whilst incorporating a vocational understanding. They learn about art, craft and design and work to briefs which focus on particular areas within the art industry such as Graphics and Advertising or Costume and Theatre.

Sixth Form A’level and International Baccalaureate

Each year a growing number of students continue with the subject and enjoy challenging their ideas and skills still further. On the OCR Fine Art A’level course students can develop work in a wide range of areas including painting, printing, mixed-media, photography and sculpture. The IB course is similar and places few restrictions on students and allows them to select from a range of media and techniques to express themselves. Students are encouraged to make exciting and interesting artistic journeys that are valuable and significant to their own interest and lives. Throughout they will learn about the work of artists and make regular trips to Art Galleries and Museums. Our gallery shows a range of their work and includes the MRC prize winning work of an IB student based on ‘Imagining the Brain.’

Trips

Art Department links with Springdales School in India

In October 2006 staff and sixth formers gained a valuable insight into the artistic heritage and culture of this fascinating country. Impington has established the exchange programme with Springdales as part of The British Council Global Curriculum. We enjoyed workshops on aspects of Indian architecture and folk art. We were also fortunate to hear Dr Rajeev Lochan the director of Delhi’s Museum of Modern Art lecture on ‘The Impact of Colonialism on Indian Art Forms.’ The second phase of our trip offered a remarkable experience when we spent time at the Happy Valley Tibetan School in Musoorie. We toured classrooms, interacted with students in lessons and were treated to a beautiful display of Tibetan dance. The photographs here give a flavour of what we saw, experienced and learnt from our trip to India.
